The Monroeville Hospital was established in Monroeville in 1910, initially operating out of a three-story house on Stockton Avenue near Monroe Center. Due to the growth of Monroeville, more facilities became necessary on West Seventh Avenue. By 1920, however, its board of directors had established the Allegheny Health, Education, and Research Foundation (AHERF) to administer its new hospital properly.

The addition doubles the capacity of their post-acute care unit while offering a state-of-the-art electrophysiology lab and a nine-bay private gastrointestinal suite. Furthermore, there’s a state-of-the-art central sterile processing facility for efficient instrument cleaning and preparation.
Monroeville Hospital was opened as part of Forbes Health System, established through the merger between Columbia Hospital in Wilkinsburg and Pittsburgh Hospital in East Liberty in 1972.
The medical center has recently made several significant advances, such as becoming a Level Two Trauma Center and expanding its heart-lung transplant program to include kidney and corneal transplantation. They also boast one of the nation’s largest combined liver-lung transplant teams, which recently conducted their milestone 1,000th surgery.
The Forbes Hospital Joint and Spine Center offers orthopedic services, including total knee and hip replacements, spine procedures, and sports medicine.
